How can we increase and speed up the roll out of clean energy? We've seen a big boost in renewables lately. This is great news, but there's still a long way to go. What's holding us back? Issues like permits, grid development, and storage are just a few of the challenges we need to tackle.

China's rise to become an EV and battery superpower has been even more impressive and shocking than its past scale-up in other manufacturing fields. More so than other fields China came to dominate, like steel, electronics, or solar, the car industry is rightly perceived as a pillar of economic success for advanced economies. How did China achieve this success? How could it happen so quickly? And are there any strategies that China used that might be applied elsewhere, in particular in Europe?
FES has recently published a policy brief “Decoding China’s Electric Vehicle Success: Lessons for Europe” on this subject, by Anders Hove, Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. He researches on China’s clean energy innovation and consults on global strategies for dealing with China’s arrival on the EV scene.
Anders Hove will present the findings of this publication and share insights from his research, catalysing a discussion of different paths forward for European companies and policy makers. We will hear comments from relevant EU policy makers and stakeholders and also engage in a discussion with our roundtable participants about these questions.
