How to talk climate

Language matters. The same applies to building a future-proof economy and society. Climate action has become an ideological battleground, fuelling polarisation and uncertainty. Many people – including industrial workers – are increasingly reluctant to talk about climate and transition. Our online campaign highlights narratives that can help make climate action relevant to people's everyday lives and rebuild support among skeptical audiences.

The interplay of Powers

Those who talk about climate should also talk about power, influence, and competitiveness. These arguments make clear what is at stake: technologies, raw materials, markets, and standards.

The tone is important: no aggression, no enemy images — but a straightforward message: Inaction harms us economically and socially.

Climate action is not a stumbling block

An effective counter-narrative to the "too expensive" rhetoric:
Climate protection is not a burden, but an investment in competitiveness.

Sustainable companies will be ahead in future tenders, more attractive to investors, and more robust against price spikes and trade barriers.
Furthermore, international partners are increasingly relying on clean supply chains.

Show industry as the solution

The future of industry is not created on a drawing board — but on the factory floors.
The experience of the workforce is the prerequisite for success.
This creates a different narrative (than?):
Export opportunities, technological leadership, secure supply.
And above all: participation and pride instead of appeals to guilt or sacrifice.

It’s all about jobs

In industry, it is not the moral appeal that decides, but the economic perspective.
Future security must mean: The job is secure, or has the prospect of being so, even in 10 years' time.

Concrete examples, investment in skills, social dialogue, and participation are important.
