This May Day, it becomes clear: more than ever, the debate on work is a debate on industrial policy.

Across Europe, public funds are being mobilised to modernise industry and make it fit for the future. That is necessary. 

But the key question remains: under what conditions?

Trade unions are pushing back against a race to the bottom on standards and protections, currently framed under the banner of competitiveness.

Instead, the principle should be clear: where public money flows, clear conditions must follow — good jobs, fair wages, and reliable prospects.

That is how competitiveness is built to last.
