The economy grows, emissions fall - that is the goal.

And it is possible. According to a study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), this has been achieved in around a third of the 1,500 regions examined.

Not all regions worldwide were examined. However, the regions included in the study are responsible for around 85% of global emissions.

Europe is clearly leading the way in decoupling growth and emissions, as it is making steady progress in this direction. In Asia and North America, on the other hand, the fluctuations are greater.

The key to success: a consistent national climate policy and a committed approach at urban level, for example, or an engagement in regions undergoing structural change backed up by appropriate funding programs.

However, it’s also clear: this is not enough. On the one hand, decoupling is needed across all regions. And the pace would also have to pick up again, even among the frontrunners.
