Is this the (energy) turning point?

China has issued far fewer permits for new coal-fired power plants this year than in previous years.

This is very good news, as the People's Republic emits the most CO2 worldwide. Coal has always played a central role in the energy mix.
However, permits have now fallen by a whopping 80% in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. The reason: the massive expansion of renewables.
But there is a catch: the coal plants that have already been approved but not yet built.
For this year alone, coal projects with a capacity of over 100 gigawatts are still in the pipeline.
Nonetheless, experts now hope that given the pace of renewable expansion, some of the planned coal projects will remain shelved.
