Background

The transformation of electricity sectors in Armenia and Georgia presents both strategic challenges and opportunities amid climate change, geopolitical uncertainty, and the global energy transition. As energy import-dependent countries, both are expanding renewables, modernising infrastructure, and seeking closer regional integration to strengthen resilience and align with EU energy and climate goals.

The study “Green Electricity Transitions in Armenia and Georgia,” supported by FES Just Climate, shows that cross-border cooperation could unlock substantial benefits, from improving system reliability and integrating renewables to creating new export opportunities through flagship projects, such as the Black Sea Submarine Electricity Cable. At the same time, regulatory misalignments, outdated infrastructure, and geopolitical tensions continue to pose obstacles.

The authors will present their key findings and recommendations on how Armenia and Georgia can accelerate reforms, expand interconnections, and build institutional capacity, followed by expert commentary and discussion on pathways toward a more resilient, interconnected, and low-carbon electricity future.

The study will be shared with interested participants prior to the event.
