How can the EU ensure its resilience despite diverse geopolitical challenges?
"Let's be good ancestors"
In his opening keynote, European Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, answers the question of how the EU can ensure its resilience in energy supply despite the diverse geopolitical challenges. According to Timmermans, the EU's Green Deal is the right answer. If we manage to implement it fast, there will be plenty of opportunity: Europe should tap into first-mover advantages in new clean technologies in all sectors. There is need to boost renewables, cut the EU's reliance on imported fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency, develop alternatives for industry like hydrogen, but also strengthen carbon pricing and speed up the transition to clean and sustainable mobility. Timmemans concluded by underlining that the EU's climate policies have also a role to play as social policy for a fair transition, making everyone part of the transition.
