Foresighted structural policy is needed to ensure that Europe can assert itself in tomorrow’s tough international competition for key industries, safeguarding prosperity and providing decent jobs. The market alone will not suffice. A protective, guiding and future-oriented state is the essence of social democracy.
We shall serve as a platform for strategic exchange between industrial and energy policy and learning from the experiences of others.

We have taken a close look at studies and forecasts on the development of the European labour market. One thing is clear: without qualified and motivated workers, the economy will not flourish and the modernisation process will come to a standstill. Europe must deliver on a massive scale in the coming years to remain at the forefront.

Claudia Detsch is the director of the FES Competence Centre for Climate and Social Justice. Previously, she was editor-in-chief of the IPS Journal in Berlin and editor of the Buenos Aires-based journal Nueva Sociedad. From 2008 to 2012, she headed the FES office in Ecuador and the Foundation’s regional energy and climate project in Latin America. She is a sociologist and studied in Hamburg and Barcelona.
